The general aim of this application is to support ongoing research on Vietnamese grammar, with the wider goal of understanding the limits of syntactic variation cross-linguistically. The requested funds are intended for two main purposes: (i) to foster more intensive collaborative research with professional colleagues in Vietnam, and elsewhere (Germany, US); (ii) to develop an online archive dedicated to research publications, reports, and other scholarship concerned with Vietnamese grammar, especially from a comparative perspective.
In spite of the limitations imposed by the Covid-19 situation (see below), some progress was possible. In addition to continuing work on the main monograph, 2021-2022 saw the publication of a journal article, co-authored with Trang Phan, in Taiwan Journal of Linguistics (19.1-32). I also worked on two other publications that have since appeared - a journal article in Journal of Southeast Asian Linguistics (9), and a book chapter for a Routledge handbook (Handbook of Southeast Asian Linguistics). In addition I organized a two-day online workshop on Vietnamese Linguistics, ISVL2, in March, involving 10 international speakers. Dr. Phan and I will edit a special issue of Taiwan Journal of Linguistics, containing the proceedings of that workshop.

理由
The main purpose of this grant was to support collaborative exchanges between myself and researchers in Vietnam and overseas, and to raise the profile of Vietnamese research in Japan. Due to the Covid-19 situation in Japan and Vietnam, it was impossible to carry out these activities in 2021-2022. For this reason, none of the funding allocated for the year was used; funds were carried over.
In addition, it has proven difficult to recruit suitable research assistants to help with the archive project. (In the coming months, I will be talking with Prof. Shimizu (Osaka University), to see if one of his students may be interested in working for the project.)

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
In this year of the project (2022-23), I will continue writing the core textbook (Vietnamese Syntax: a Generative Typological Approach), in collaboration with Trang Phan. In line with the grant application, I have invited Dr. Phan to visit Konan University for a week in November 2022, and again in March 2023, so that we make more progress. We will also work to edit the special issue of Taiwan Journal of Linguistics (Proceedings of ISVL2: see above).
There is also a plan to develop closer collaborative links with Prof. Shimizu and his research group at Osaka University: if this proves successful, I expect to make progress on the archive project.
I will also use funds for conference and workshop trips to Vietnam, once border restrictions are lifted (provided the Covid-19 situation improves).
