研究実績の概要 |
The data collection for this project has started well in spite of the pandemic and the additional challenges that caused in terms of needing to rely on teachers to send recorded Zoom videos of speaking tests. Since we've been back in the classroom, data collection has been smooth. It will continue on through the Fall semester of 2022. We have been focusing on getting the data into a usable format including having the audio tracks cut and sent for transcription. From this year, we have a dedicated transcriber who will be working with us on the project. As part of that process, we’ve been anonymizing the data and getting it ready to be processed using R-based scripts.
We presented four times this year on the project: first at BAAL (the British Association of Applied Linguistics) conference which was online. This was a poster presentation describing the project. Second, we presented at Jalt 2021 in November focusing mainly on outcomes of the pilot project. We also published in the Post Conference Publication for that conference. We got feedback on project and how others might want to engage with the corpus from fellow presenters at the Hiroshima Lexical Research Forum conference in January of this year. We also presented on the corpus project at TESOL in March. The main focus of that presentation was the pilot project and where we plan to go with the larger corpus project.

理由
The project is progressing smoothly and data collection is becoming increasingly smooth as we apply what we learned from the first round of data collection in Spring of 2021. While we had hoped to be collecting data in the classroom for the whole project, initial data collection began online as classes in the target program continued to be online through spring of 2021. Fall classes in 2022 were partially online and partially face to face which presented additional challenges as data collection is happening not only in our own classes but across all sections in English program. This meant asking a number of different teachers with different technical skills to help us with the project. This has been taken into account as we have proceeded with subsequent data collection.
In addition, data transcription has gone relatively smoothly. Initial transcriptions were done using the transcription service, Rev. we found that the transcriptions we're done slightly differently depending on when they were submitted, and we have since changed to using a dedicated transcriber who will be with us throughout the project.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Data collection will continue through the fall semester of 2023 covering two cohorts of students in the English language program. Our focus for this upcoming year will be to continue with data collection. We are currently on campus which has made the data collection much simpler and is allowing that to run much more smoothly. In addition to that, we are continuing with getting the spoken data transcribed, anonymizing that, and proceeding with analysis of the Multimodal data. We will be looking at vocabulary and formulaic language use across different modes of production as well as addressing issues of lexical diversity Across spoken and written language.
In the upcoming year, we have been accepted to present at the JALT pan-sig conference in July and have applied for several other conferences including BAAL. We have additionally applied to include a chapter in a book focused on using learner corpora in materials development. We will be applying for additional presentations and publications as those opportunities arise.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
The reasons for incurring the expenses to be used this coming year will be getting the data collected transcribed and attending conferences. Part of the 2021 data has been transcribed, but we will be working on considerably more of that this year as well as the data that will be collected over the course of the next two semesters. Our dedicated transcriber will be starting to work on those in the upcoming month.
With regard to conferences, the pan-sig conference that we have been accepted to present at will be held in Nagano in July. At present, the conference is scheduled to be held face to face and we will be traveling there to attend that. Provided the situation does not change, we hope to be able to attend other conferences in the July and August break between semesters.
