研究実績の概要

Written and spoken data were collected from Queen Mary University of London international students enrolled in a pre-sessional course. Response rates were disappointing due to the online collection process necessitated by Covid19 although sufficient for analysis to proceed as planned. Both spoken (102 x 15-minute seminar discussions) and written (102 x 2000-word essays) data were processed. The subsequent analysis yielded contributions to:
1) our understanding of 6 lexical diversity measures and their impact on 3 different word counting methods. The results were reported at an international conference and accepted for publishing: Assessing Writing journal
2) our understanding of how multiword units relate to spoken fluency.

理由

Due to Covid19 restrictions the participants were all studying online, which led to fewer participants than expected. From a pool of 600 potential participants only 120 consented and shared their data. The analysis of a large corpus, that had been planned, will therefore have to wait until more data can be collected.

今後の研究の推進方策

In September 2022 a new cohort of QMUL students will be asked to participate in the project. As these students will probably be taught on-campus more participants can be expected in this 2nd phase of data collection.

Due to Covid19 the investigators could not attend conferences as planned.
