研究実績の概要

In the spring and fall semesters of 2022, intervention studies were conducted in over 11 General English classes and with nearly 200 student participants (in their first and second years). Students in the intervention courses took part in weekly multi-modal assignments using Moodle, in which students practiced developing and expressing opinions about international topics. Students in the control group received no such practice. All students filled in the International Posture (IP) survey in the first and last class meeting of each semester.
Results were analyzed statistically to identify whether the activities increased students' IP scores. Non-parametric analyses were employed. For the first semester, no statistical differences were identified in terms of IP gains in both the intervention and control groups. However, through background information gathered on the surveys it was found that students' experiences using English outside of classes in high school correlated with IP more strongly than experience abroad. Data collected in the fall semester is currently undergoing statistical analysis.

In terms of our research aims, this research project is progressing in a timely fashion. There are no significant delays to report.

今後の研究の推進方策

In 2023, pre-course/post-course IP surveys will continue with an expanded number of university student participants. Third-year students in a content-based course (Medical English I) will also be surveyed to identify the effect that content-based instruction has on students' IP. In addition, to enhance the quantitative data collected over the past two years, qualitative data will be collected in the form of students' written responses to tasks intended to elicit their opinions about international issues. This qualitative data will undergo text-mining analysis to identify common themes.

次年度使用額が生じた理由

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the co-researchers were unable to attend conference presentations in Fukuoka and Osaka. For this reason, travel expenses were less than expected. In R5, two conferences in Tokyo to be attended by two researchers are planned, in addition to several other conferences in other parts of Japan. As a result, additional expenses will be needed in R5. The money left over from R4 will be used here.
