研究実績の概要

In accordance with our original Kakenhi plan, in 2022-23 the 6 liberal arts modules (Sociology, Economics, Earth Science, Health and Medicine, Zoology, and Natural History) which were piloted in 2021-22 were further developed and used across the entire program of 15 classes and approximately 230 students for 4 koma week (only 2 koma, 3 classes, and 50 students in the 2021-22 pilot). The results were highly encouraging. By using the liberal arts modules instead of commercial communicative textbooks to develop students’ academic reading and listening skills, the TOEFL ITP gain in 2022-23 was 140% greater than for students over the previous six years in the pre-existing traditional program. This strongly corroborated-and exceeded-the results of the 2021-22 pilot study in which the three of 15 classes using a CLIL approach for 2 koma a week showed a 70% higher TOEFL gain. Moreover, it is interesting to note that as the koma in which the modules doubled from 2 to 4, the score gain also doubled from 70% to 140% over the norm. The researcher-practitioners now hope to share their curricular materials on a common platform to partner with other universities. They have also been reporting their approach, methods, and results in a series of presentations at major language-teaching conferences across Japan (see below).

理由

The Kakenhi-supported research is proceeding very much according to its original plan. Although Covid slowed the first year of the grant-based research, the research and the implementation of the new liberal arts CIL-based curriculum are currently following the original schedule.
