研究実績の概要 |
This study aims to identify the types of training and support that can be offered online to elementary school teachers who have to teach English classes or English language activities from 2020 and the effectiveness of such support. To this end, the researchers organized interviews with elementary school teachers of English. The interviews were transcribed and analysed and the findings were reported in a hybrid-type presentation by the two researchers at the JALT 2022 Conference at the Fukuoka International Congress Center, Japan in November 2022. For comparison purposes, school visits and informal hearings with teachers were also conducted abroad. These interviews provided the basis for the development of a wide-scale survey to be conducted in 2023.

理由
As the research took place during the Covid-19 pandemic, conducting teacher interviews proved to be quite problematic and it led to the overall delay of the project. However, the researchers are now in the final stage of their survey development and plan to implement it as soon as possible.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Survey development is going well, with the researchers now having already obtained feedback from several elementary school teachers. Based on their constructive comments, the researcehrs have made changes and improvements to the survey items. The plan is to send the survey to as many schools as possible around Japan within the next month or so and obtain responses before the end of June or July. There might be an issue regarding the ability to reach possible respondents. The researchers will reach out to both local boards of education and individual schools, either directly or through other channels including research associations and other teacher-support groups.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the researchers undertook less traveling than initially planned. Therefore, part of the budget that was asigned to traveling was rebated to the next fiscal year. Thanks to the ease of restrictions on travel, the researchers plan to travel both abroad and domestically to take part in conferences, workshops and other events, including possible training sessions for elementary school teachers of English. Also, some money will be used for mailing survey copperation requests to education boards and school in various parts of the country.
