I have conducted literature review and done case studies related to global sustainability strategies of Asian multinational enterprises following the COVID-19 pandemic to build up new interdisciplinary theoretical frameworks that would address critical issues in the post-pandemic world economy. Amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which was first identified from an outbreak in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, the resulting heightened nationalism and protectionism are expected to make the post-pandemic world economies experience increased global risks and more decoupling, and thus unstable value chains, along with declining globalization. To address and mitigate these escalating risks, the world economy would have to be even more globalized through multinational enterprises (MNEs) pursuing different international business strategies. However, such pandemic is expected to have long-lasting effects on the recovery of globalization. The resulting within- and between-country inequalities, populism, nationalism, and state interventionism, as well as weaken multilateral institutions are expected to intensify anti-globalization sentiments, and protectionism, which in turn, heighten the costs of international transactions, and thereby compromising trends in globalization.

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
The research work for FY2022 will continue from the FY2021 according to the plan. I will complete conceptual research papers based on theoretical frameworks developed in FY2021. During FY2022, I will also continue to collect company and environment data, especially related to the implications of COVID-19 pandemic to test the hypotheses developed in these conceptual papers.
