研究実績の概要 |
First, we obtained all Japanese version of the scales that planned to use in this study, and then obtained ethical research approval from the Research Ethics Committee, School of Medicine, Showa University. Next, we started data collection by recruiting medical students going on an international elective clinical clerkship during their 6th year and a control group of classmates who were staying in Japan to do their elective clinical clerkship. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the number of students going abroad is much smaller than before. Therefore, we are using this first year’s data more as a pilot study to evaluate the scales to measure physician empathy and the patient scenarios that we created for the medical interview with standardized patients. Similarly, we ran one clinical English workshop (study 2) with these students, with the goal of piloting the scales that we plan to use for study 2 and evaluating the methodology that we plan to use in study 2.

理由
The progress of this study is slightly delayed for two reasons. 1. Delay in recruiting participants. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the medical school approved international elective clinical clerkships later than normal. Additionally, only about one-third the normal number of students decided to go on an international clinical clerkship this year. Consequently, we couldn’t start participant recruitment or data collection as soon as we wanted. 2. Delay in creating patient scenarios for medical interviews with standardized patients. Our original plan was to have students conduct a OSCE-like medical interview with standardized patients. However, after consultation with our colleagues in the medical education department, we decided to create more casual “patient conversation” scenarios. This decision slightly delayed the creation of the scenarios and has also taken more time to develop. As a result, we had to change the study design for this year, and students will only perform 1 interview with a standardized patient after their (international) elective clinical clerkship.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
1. Create 2 “patient conversation” scenarios, confirm that their level of difficulty is approximately equal, and train standardized patients on these scenarios 2. Confirm appropriateness of the various scales used in this study 3. Data collection. 4. Data analysis. 5. Reporting of results (Manuscript writing and publication; presentation at national and international conferences). 6. Start study 2, which will examine if simply interacting with someone from another culture, rather than studying abroad, is sufficient for improving physician empathy in medical students

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, our medical school's decision to restart international elective clinical clerkships for the 2021 academic year was delayed, and the number of medical students who actually decided to study abroad was severely reduced. These two points contributed to a delay in the start of this research project, which means that I couldn't use the full amount of money assigned to this academic year. However, I anticipate that the 2022 academic year will lead to a normal return to international exchange activities, and that I'll be able to conduct this study as originally planned.
