We have investigated the redox-coupled fluorescence switching of donor-appended pyrazinacenes with 4 and 5 fused pyrazine rings. Efficient fluorescence is observed in both reduced and oxidized species. Fluorescence switches from the visible region to the infrared (850 nm) or even short wave infrared regions (1015 nm). Water soluble extended pyrazinacenes consisting of 7 fused pyrazine rings have been developed as a new class of NIR fluorescent dyes for cellular imaging applications. These dyes have advantages of excellent photostability and high fluorescence quantum yields. Interestingly, DNA and RNA structures can be differentiated by simply changing excitation and observation wavelengths.
