研究実績の概要 |
To understand species diversity, distribution of the calcareous Padina, and their relationship with the environment, sample collections and field surveys were done at the Amakusa-Shimoshima, Awajishima, and Amami-Oshima of Japan. In Awajishima, it is likely to be the algal off-season in October and only one species of the calcareous Padina was found. In Amami-Oshima, marine algae showed a good condition in February, particularly at the north-eastern coast. The collected samples are now under the genetic and morphological examination. So far, three unknown Padina species are confirmed, which are considered to be new species. A review on the taxonomic classification of Padina species from Japan has been published, with detailed morphological description of each species and identification keys for Japanese species, at the Japanese Journal of Phycology (Sorui).

2: おおむね順調に進展している
理由
For the first year (FY2021), field surveys and sample collections at the three Japanese coastal regions have been done as a proposed plan. Molecular analyses, such as DNA extractions, sequencing, etc., of the collected samples are now under processing. Meanwhile, the collected samples are also thoroughly examined for their morphology under the microscopes as described in the proposed research project.
On the other hand, due to the Japanese Government's Border Measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Japan, principal investigator (PI) was unable to go to Myanmar coastal areas for field survey and sample collection in 2021. However, the collaborator from Myanmar collected Padina samples from the Rakhine coast of Myanmar on behave of PI and sent them to Japan in Dec. 2021. Currently, the Myanmar samples are under processing for morphological and molecular analyses. The substitute surveys for environmental factors will be performed in 2022.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Field surveys and sample collections will be performed in Okinawa islands, Amami-Oshima, Awaji-shima, Kagoshima, Kanagawa and Chiba coastal areas in 2022. Field surveys and sample collections will be done in Myanmar, particularly along the coast of Rakhine and Tanintharyi regions in 2022.
Molecular analyses of the collected samples will be carried out using multigene markers and data analyses will also be done using various phylogenetic methods and software. Environmental, oceanographic and ecological data will be analyzed. Morphological examination of the collected samples will be conducted under the microscope. A paper of the report of a new Padina species from southern Japan will be prepared to publish at the International Journal "Phycologia".

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Due to the Japanese Government's Border Measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in 2021, field surveys and sample collections were not able to be done in Myanmar.
Therefore, the substitute trips for field surveys and sample collections along the Myanmar coastal areas will be performed in 2022.
