研究実績の概要 |
Our research team's achievements this year have been focused on collecting and analyzing new data, giving presentations and working on various publications related to this project, and working on detailed literature reviews on our research areas. We have begun preliminary collection of data by contacting one participant over Zoom who engages in the practice of josou regularly in Japan and doing an in-depth interview with them which has already been transcribed and is currently undergoing initial analysis. We have also examined social media of several people in Japan living on the gender and sexual borders of society. Additionally, members of the research team have given four different presentations at international venues.
Our preliminary examinations have revealed that the concept of kawaii or cuteness is quite possibly central to the josou experience for many individuals. We also discovered that acceptance in other areas of life such as work or friends can play a key role for many who live on this border allowing them to find their ibasho or place where they can belong. Our first interview has also shown how the discourse of non-binary gender can be utilized to question traditional gender categories and also to critically examine life in current society for many young people living on these borders.

理由
We experienced some delays due to the pandemic. While we did manage to start collecting some data over Zoom, this was less than ideal given the various technological restrictions such as internet speed and computer issues experienced while conducting our interview. Given the sensitive nature of the topic we are researching, finding new participants is very delicate and much better done in person, so we have been waiting until all of our research team were able to physically come together. This continues to remain an issue since not all the team members are in Tokyo and furthermore several conferences have been postponed or are otherwise unreasonable for us to participate in because of government restrictions around COVID-19.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Our main plans for the future are to focus on continued collection of interview data, planning for workshops and/or study groups related to gender and sexuality, and working on several publications. For further data collection we plan to do more interviews in person with our initial participant as well as having them introduce us to other possible interviewees in their social groups. We are also working on a list of possible scholars to invite for study group sessions as well as a potential symposium during the final year of the project. Finally, our members have been invited into several international writing projects based around our research topic and they will be working on writing these eight publications in both peer reviewed journals and edited volumes during the current year.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
We were unable to go to most conferences because of the restrictions given by our separate universities and by the Japanese government. Furthermore we were unable to conduct the number of interviews were wanted because of the states of emergency which prevented us from using the honorarium money for participants as we originally planned so we would like to carry these funds over into next year so that we can continue to do our research. We plan to continue collecting data and go to several international conferences in person such as the International Pragmatics Association in Brussels and the Association for Asian Studies conference in Boston.
