| 研究実績の概要 |
The PI started operationalizing the grant for FY 2021 by initiating a literature review and data collection. An ethics clearance was obtained at the beginning of the project. Subsequently, the PI hired and coordinated with field researchers based in the Philippines to assist in the archival research and key informant interviews. Monthly online meetings were held to guide the field researchers. The archival research was completed for seven urban sites, and 27 interviews were undertaken and transcribed for security, justice, and development issues.
The PI presented online the preliminary findings of the research project at an international conference, i.e., the International Studies Association 2022 Annual Convention.

理由
COVID19-related travel restrictions initially delayed the fieldwork. First, data were collected from interviews rather than focus group discussions due to COVID-19 restrictions. Second, although visual documentation was included in the archival research, more recent footage of the site needs to be collected. Despite these challenges, the competitive hiring of field researchers ensured that the data collection went on smoothly. Almost all of the necessary data were obtained as planned for the first year of the project implementation. The archival research and interview data provided sufficient data for preliminary analysis.

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
As scheduled, the PI will continue analysing the archival materials and interview data and draft two written outputs (a journal article and a policy paper or two journal articles).
The PI will continue the data collection in FY 2022 by visiting the field site in light of the recent easing of travel restrictions. Fieldwork in Marawi City anytime between August to December will be scheduled to collect more visual documentation as complementary materials to the existing data from archival research and assess the need for focus group discussions.
The PI expects to launch the short video documentary and pitch an opinion-editorial in the second quarter of FY2022, as scheduled.

| 次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
The grant for FY 2022 will be used for fieldwork expenses (travel, accommodation, and field assistant fee), focus group facilitation, video production, and potential conference presentation.
The remaining balance from FY 2021 was due to overestimation in honorarium for research assistants but will be used in FY 2022 for fieldwork expenses.
