研究実績の概要 |
The purposes of this research are to 1) understand the nature of indigenous socio-cultural values and agrarian practices in Okinawa; 2) to examine the land use regulations and the process of restoration and resurgence; 3) to identify the correlation between land-based activism and indigenous rights recognition of the community. This study seeks to link Okinawan cultural politics and social movements and shed light on practices that constitute an underacknowledged form of indigenous resurgence.
While being in line with the research purposes, most of the research in 2021 resulted in making presentations at international conferences, writing, and prepared for publications. Due to the spread of coronavirus variants that has continued since 2019, I have decided to refrain from conducting the data collection and in-person interviews in Okinawa scheduled for the summer of 2021. I changed the research plan. As an alternative to conducting the field research in Okinawa, I have organized the materials I collected before, examined, analyzed them, made reports, and started writing papers based on those data. This process was scheduled for the third year of this research period, and I preponed and carried it out ahead of schedule. This year's fund was used to cover the cost of exchanging opinions on specialized knowledge and structural editing from an editor of academic books. Based on the comments, I was able to identify the points that should be supplemented by further research. Reflecting on the editor’s advice, I aim to publish a scholarly book at the end of this research.

理由
The research performance in 2021 was mainly writing papers and organizing data materials. I was able to examine some aspects of cultural politics and Okinawan social movements to develop discussions of Okinawan indigeneity based on the previously collected materials. I made progress in writing and presenting at conferences for further discussions of the emergence of Okinawan indigeneity. However, due to the rapid expansion of the Omicron variant in Okinawa, I refrained from traveling from the city center to the field site and conducting in-person interviews with elderly research participants. In addition, libraries and museums continued to be closed in Okinawa, making the collection of some archival materials difficult. I evaluated that the research progress was slightly delayed because the field research and data collection through interviews in Okinawa planned for the first year could not be carried out.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
For the next two years, I plan to conduct field surveys in Okinawa, which were canceled in 2021, while I continue to organize, analyze, report and write based on the collected materials. In addition, I would like to seek alternative means for interviews and identify potential research participants as early as possible to prepare for alternative options of in-person interviews and long-term communication with research participants.
