Study on anti-AD functional marine phytosterols and their sources in dietary seaweeds

研究実績の概要

Firstly, the total phytosterols in seaweeds were obtained. The preparation conditions (including solvent extraction and saponification) were optimized using one factor at a time (OFAT) and response surface methodology (RSM) strategies, and the total phytosterols were obtained from different seaweeds as our experiment materials.
Secondly, a sensitive, accurate, and practicable quantitative method for seaweed phytosterols was developed and validated using the 1H-NMR. The analytes included both the total phytosterols and the three predominant phytosterol components. The subsequent comparative investigation was performed among the major Japanese edible brown seaweeds.
Thirdly, the protective effects of seaweed-derived phytosterols on nerve cells. PC12 cells were treated with overloaded fatty acids and Amyloid beta peptide for inducing the in vitro AD model. And seaweed phytosterols were found to recover cell viability without causing cytotoxicity.

The seaweed phytosterols has been obtained using optimized method.
The NMR-based quantitative method for seaweed phytosterols has been developed and validated.
The primary beneficial function of seaweed phytosterols on nerve cells has been observed.

今後の研究の推進方策

The comprehensive investigation of phytosterols will be conducted for the seaweeds of different species, growing area, seasons, and other environmental factors.
The further functions, especially anti-AD-related regulations concerning lipid metabolism, will be evaluated for these phytosterols.
The potential anti-AD health beneficial effects of the seaweeds and their phytosterol characteristics will be connected by using the combined analytical and biochemical approaches.

次年度使用額が生じた理由

Due to the COVID-19, there were delivery problems for some consumables. So, I cannot get them in time.
