研究実績の概要 |
The COVID-19 crisis has affected societies and economies around the globe and will thoroughly reshape our world as it continues to unfold. It is likely to trigger permanent long-term impacts on the transport sector in the post-COVID world and its “new normal”. While the post-COVID’s new normal would have negative interferences, it can be an opportunity to adapt a more sustainable transport sector. To understand the role of the transport sector in achieving climate change targets with the arrival of the post-COVID’s new normal, this research project is intended to analyze the transport dynamics with an energy focus when considering the unprecedented challenges and opportunities stemming from the post-COVID’s new normal. This year, an integrated transport energy model, which contains a transport model and a bottom-up, technology rich, energy system model, has been developed to project the transport demand, modal choices, energy use and emission profiles with the objective of drawing long-term implications for decarbonizing the transport sector. The model coupling enables to design an interdisciplinary research framework from an overall perspective that integrates transport planning and energy studies to address challenges and opportunities on transport decarbonization with the arrival of post-COVID’s new normal.

理由
The data collection and database establishment have been conducted to develop a transport model and a bottom-up, technology rich, energy system model. The transport model has been developed to offer spatial flexible and temporally dynamic simulations of transport demand and modal choices, while the energy system model with a detailed technology selection framework associated with a technology database is being created to detect the optimal technology and energy mix, and the corresponding emissions in the transport sector.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
To couple the transport model with the energy system model, an iterative algorithm will be designed to achieve the convergence of coupled transport-energy model. Then, a set of scenarios are structured considering the influencing mechanism of post-COVID’s new normal. These scenarios are defined according to the technological and behavioral assumptions of lifestyle changes, mobility innovation, transport planning, and climate policy. Policy implications will be obtained based on the scenario simulations to explore the long-term pathways toward deep transport decarbonization in the post-COVID world.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Due to the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is not possible to travel on business. This is the reason for incurring amount to be used next fiscal year. The incurred amount will be used for travel expenses if it becomes possible to travel in the fiscal year 2022.
