The purpose of this research is to design and synthesize X-ray-excited, small-sized, deep ultraviolet-afterglow nanoparticles for the therapy of malignant tumors. Synthesis of nanoparticles showing deep ultraviolet afterglow was conducted. Pr3+-doped Cs2NaYF6 double perovskite nanoparticles were synthesized by a soft chemistry route. The detailed synthetic parameters that can affect the size distribution and photophysical properties of nanoparticles were thoroughly investigated. In particular, the parameters governing the optical properties were examined and determined. The structure and morphology of these particles were investigated. The obtained particles show deep ultraviolet afterglow after charging by X-rays, and the afterglow properties of nanoparticles and micrometer-size particles were compared. We further investigated the effect of capping ligands on the deep ultraviolet afterglow intensity, and found that removing the organic capping ligands is necessary for the attainment of strong deep ultraviolet afterglow. We developed a well-controlled surface-ligand stripping approach to boost the afterglow intensity. We also found that the post-treatment in a controlled atmosphere can boost the intensity of deep ultraviolet afterglow.
