The main objective of this research was the implementation of a near-field wireless power transfer (WPT) system employing metamaterial inspired geometry. A low magnetic loss near-filed metamaterial was proposed for this objective by introducing multi-ring-resonator that has low magnetic loss.
The proposed design was fabricated and achieved a measured RF-RF WPT efficiency of more than 51% when the receiver (RX) was mounted inside chicken breast at 9 mm depth. The size of the RX was 50% smaller than the most compact design reported in iterature. A rectifier without any additional matching circuit on the back side of the RX substatre was proposed and had an overall RF-dc efficieny of 40% was achieved. Moreover, this system works within the standard power limits defined by the IEEE. The overall size of the RX was 50% smaller than the most compact design reported in literature.
The prototyped WPT system is to be integrated with a digital chip that can allow for simultaneous wireless power and information transfer on the same power channel, which is funded by another project that I operate as the PI. Also, further improvements of the proposed metamaterial is under investigatation.
