| 研究実績の概要 |
This collaborative research grant on Democratic Regress, Renewal, and Resilience began in February 2021. Therefore, the activities for FY 2021 primarily involves planning sessions with the co-PIs in Japan and the research collaborators at the Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law at Stanford University.
In several meetings, the PI and co-PIs developed a detailed plan for the grant period. The first component of the research project will focus on opposition responses to aggrandizing executives. Each of the four members of the research team will cover one type of opposition group: voters, political parties, legislators and civil society. The evidence for our arguments will come from relevant cases in Asia and Latin America. We will later expand the project to the broader theme of democratic regression and resilience in developing countries.
The PI also held meetings with researchers in the United States to plan for a research seminar and writing workshop to be held in early 2023 at Stanford University.

Although the project is still in the initial phase, the research has already begun, and feasible plans have been made for continuing this progress.

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
Research will continue on the question of how opposition actors respond to an aggrandizing executive in power. In the second half of 2022, the research team will circulate paper drafts in preparation for the seminar in March 2023 at Stanford University.
In addition, the PI will continue to conduct research to support her typology of democratic regime types, which will be applied to cases in later stages of this research project.
The PI will also continue to develop connections with researchers at Stanford University and other top universities in California. Through these connections, the project will obtain a global reach to include developing countries in Africa, in addition to Latin America and Asia, which are the areas of regional expertise of the PI and co-PIs on this project.

| 次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
As the research project was at the initial stage in FY 2021, we did not use all of the funds allocated for this year. Instead, we will use the funds in FY 2022 to support research and travel expenses for the upcoming research seminar and writing workshop to be held at Stanford University.
