This year 2023 I was able to access many new recordings from the 1980s from the East Cleveland Area (e.g. the villages such as Skelton, Brotton, Loftus, Staithes, Runswick Bay). The recordings are held at the Land of Iron Museum in Skinningrove. These recordings, which are now in digital form, were made as part of the East Cleveland Heritage Project. Although I knew that the recordings had been made, I was not sure if they and the associated metadata still existed. Fortunately, it does, and I was able to gather most of this data about the speakers on the recordings plus I scanned hundreds of type-written transcripts during a short visit to England in late April and May 2023. However, like with other typed data from this period, OCR does not yield accurate results and much manual processing is needed for the transcripts. I have gained some help in doing this from a research assistant. There are too many recordings for this scale of project, so a selection of these has been made as originally planned. The data collection side of the project has gone well, and I have made good contacts with the curators at the Land of Iron Museum and wish to collaborate with them in future and to help show the value of their rich archive of oral history materials.

理由
In academic year 2023 my main focus was on my Saterland Frisian Kaken project (19K00607), which was delayed due to the pandemic. I made three field work trips to Germany, so it took the focus off my oral history recordings project for a while. However, I have a better schedule in 2024 and should be able to made good progress.
