研究実績の概要 |
The purpose of this kaken is to replicate a well-known study on the relationship between the % of words known in a text and reading comprehension, but with lexis tested to the level of meaning-recall (i.e., via an L2-L1 translation task; MR). In 2022, we created and piloted a website to test MR knowledge at different levels of contextualization. We conducted two studies comparing several MR test formats to determine which to use for the main study. No previous research has made this kind of comparison. We have made 3 conference presentations, been invited to a 4th, and submitted 3 manuscripts for publication on this work. We also piloted reading comprehension and vocabulary tests for the main study with learners in Vietnam, China, and Japan.

理由
The comparison of different meaning-recall test item formats took more time than expected. However, the delay has been worthwhile because we enter the main study with a good undestanding of the differences and a good rationale for the item format we've selected for the main study.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Data collection for the main study is now planned for the 2024 academic year. This is a year later than the original plan. Other than this delay, there are no problems with the project; in fact, it is going better than expected based on what we have learned during our first year. Hence, we now plan to collect data in 2024 and analyze the data in the winter of 2024 and spring of 2025.
