研究実績の概要 |
An extensive review of different technologies for touch based input and haptic feedback has been conducted. In result, contact-based input employing metalized touch pads has been selected as a basis for the message input data glove. With respect to the message receiving data glove, thin circular piezoelectric actuators sized between 8mm and 12 mm in diameter have been identified as good candidates for the initial implementation. Extensive experiments have been conducted to identify the optimal controls such as voltages and frequencies necessary for producing the desirable haptic effects. An integrated control system, consisting of two microcontroller boards, a functional signal generator, a specialized piezo drive amplifier, and relay modules have been designed for connecting the two data gloves and conducting experiments. The results obtained during the current fiscal year have been reported at research meetings and symposiums and published in the Institute of Image Information and Television Engineers (ITE) and Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE) technical report series. More extensive coverage of the research achievements is provided in a paper accepted for presentation at the 17th International Conference on Innovative Mobile and Internet Services in Ubiquitous Computing (IMIS-2023) and publication in a conference proceedings book by Springer.

理由
Initial prototypes of both, the message receiving and the message sending data gloves have been developed and interconnected through a specially designed integrated control system. Since the initial system has been implemented as a proof-of-concept, efficiency, reliability, and usability issues have not be considered in full. Indeed, while some preliminary experiments have been successfully conducted with the initially developed system, it has become clear that more robust versions of the data gloves as well as of the integrated control system will be necessary. The required redesign may thus involve research and investigation of new materials and components for the data gloves, testing and selection of more advanced microcontrollers, and development of control and communication software with more advanced functionality.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
We are planning to continue with implementing a new, more robust version of the message sending and the message receiving data gloves. Novel materials such as conductive threads and fabric as well as pressure sensitive materials will be considered and experimented with for the implementation of the input functionality of the message sending data glove. With respect to the message receiving data glove, piezoelectric materials with improved feedback will be investigated and considered for employment. A compact data gloves control system, suitable for mobile use and incorporating the functionality of a signal generator, a dedicated piezo drive amplifier, an input multiplexor, and an output, high-voltage AC multiplexor for actuator switching will be designed and implemented. Finally, a more advanced microcontroller, matching the needs of the added hardware will be selected and a functionally enhanced version of the control software, suitable for the chosen microcontroller will be developed.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
The initial system, developed during the current fiscal year, was positioned as a proof-of-concept, so relatively inexpensive materials and off-the-shelf components could be employed some of which were already available as remaining stock from other research. Our plan is to use the budget transferred to the next fiscal year for acquiring the more advanced and thus costly materials, components, and other equipment that will be necessary for the continuing development of the system. In addition, the obtained intermediate results during the first year of the project were considered as research-in-progress and were thus reported at research meetings and symposiums in Japan. Our plan is to use the budget transferred to the next fiscal year for broader dissemination of the obtained research results through presentations at international conferences and for supporting the collaborative work and experiments abroad.
