研究実績の概要 |
This project is about conceiving and experimenting pedagogical material which provides learners with “embodied” grammar, using short (2 to 3 seconds) videos of spontaneous interactions (mostly conversations) they will reproduce and comment so that 1) the grammatical forms targeted (determiners and past tenses) are recalled in their context of use and 2) spoken language is experienced with its unique rhythm and melody. Different video excerpts with the targeted forms were selected and two kinds of pedagogical materializations (designed for helping learners to reproduce the segment and to increase their awareness of the grammatical function of the determiners and tenses) were created. The conception of the material mentioned here draws on theoretical work which includes literature reviews on pedagogical visualizations for prosody, pedagogical use of videos of spontaneous interactions in French as a Foreign Language, determiners, and the tense-aspect system (mostly covered during the previous project), as well as the analysis of grammar textbooks for Japanese First Language learners. Further, additional documentation was undertaken on Galperin’s Systemic Theoretical Instruction, Brown’s Microgenetic Theory, and, as a spin-off, Friston and colleagues’ Active Inference. Most of the contents mentioned here appear in an article (in French), “Reproducing spontaneous spoken language for a situated grammar. Material and approach for “un, du, ce, le” and the compound past / imperfect contrast”, a non peer reviewed short report, and 3 communications.

3: やや遅れている
理由
First, progress in theoretical documentation is going smoothly. A research note (in French) was submitted to the 日本フランス学会 looking at Bayesian inference in the reading process of the demonstrative noun phrase (a spin-off of the hypothesis). Although it was rejected, a reviewer considered the endeavor “very interesting and convincing to some extent”. This input is an improvement, but "Active inference in languaging" will be the matter of a future research project. Keys ideas in Microgenetic Theory are better understood : ontogenetic antecedence of meaning (avoiding the “tube metaphor”), “microformation” of speech, and recalling of the past in consciousness (instrumental in this project since volunteers will be interviewed in “stimulated recall” about their performance (reproducing the segment, explaining the grammar)). Second, the conception of material is not totally finalized (except for the grammatical visuals). However, I have acquired know-hows in making readable materializations and editing videos in a short period of time. Third, the design of the data collection protocol and the application for the Review Board for Research Ethics are delayed. I plan to shift the focus on the role embodied practice can play in understanding grammar. Accordingly, I will have to redesign the 2 first data collections (December to February, and after the exam period), so as to have metalinguistic discourse enriched with the recalling of the segments and a reflection upon the performance in stimulated recall interviews.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Ongoing work includes the preparation for 2 proposals exploiting results from the conception phase: to a conference in September, Best Practices in Second Language Education (Turkiye) - several members of the scientific committee are leading scholars in Sociocultural Theory for L2 - and to a journal (yet to be decided). Both should envisage learners’ internalization of concepts when the material is used as a “reverse” microgenesis of speech: the material lays down the components of a given utterance (context of use, prosody, grammar) and learners are expected to gradually sum them up in an abbreviated form and eventually in “pure thought”(Galperin). Conversely, microgenesis of speech entails that a simultaneous scene / situation / idea be fractioned in the sequential order of the spoken words. A second task is the finalization of data collection design, including the application for the Review Board for Research Ethics, and a plan to advertise the recruitment of volunteers. For the first data collection, volunteers will be introduced with the material and the task, which consists of a video recording of themselves reproducing the segments and exploiting those to comment on the targeted grammatical forms (determiners and tenses) without looking at the material. For the second, another video recording, they will be shown their performance and - this is the crux of the project - asked whether and how, at the very time of the performance, they recalled the components of the material. The last data collection, an online retrospective questionnaire, will also be created.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
The material necessary for the conception of the material and for exploiting data (a drawing pen tablet, an external hard drive for storage) and books for theoretical documentation were bought during FY1. For FY2, a proposal is being prepared for a presentation in September, Best Practices in Second Language Education (Turkiye), were will be present well-known scholars whose works are sociocognitive in nature (Lantolf, Ortega, Verspoor, Duff, etc.). In case where the proposal is rejected, I will try to propose a seminar in France in September or March to colleagues in Bordeaux Montaigne University, Clermont Auvergne University, or Lumiere University Lyon 2 on, depending on the host, embodiment in Foreign Language Learning, the grounding problem, microgenesis of speech, or some first thoughts on the significance of the Active Inference framewok to an enactive theory of language.
