Reducing the Impact of Social Anxiety on Group-based Learning Activities in the Language Classroom

研究実績の概要

The first year of the project was focused on investigating the extent of anxiety in group work and the sources of anxiety in this context in order to inform the development of a scale to measure anxiety in group work and this phase progressed as planned. An initial exploratory study using an existing measure of communication apprehension was conducted during the Spring and Fall semesters of 2022. The results revealed a large number of learners experience unease when working in groups or pairs and uncovered a number of sources of anxiety in group work. Follow-up interviews with participants in the initial survey helped to further clarify these sources of anxiety and add depth to the results. The results of this phase are presently being prepared for publication. In addition, a presentation on the impact of anxiety on group work was given, and a paper on the validity of a measure of social anxiety for use with Japanese university-level English learners was published.

理由

The initial phase of the project had proceeded according to plan. Initial data collection went smoothly, and interviews were conducted with a number of participants to verify the results from the initial survey. After acquisition of SPPS statistical software, the data was analyzed. The data gathered during this phase, together with a review of the literature on social anxiety and communication anxiety, was used in the development of a pool of items for the proposed scale. These items were rated for validity and relevance by a panel of experts and also assessed by members of the target population. As a result, the final items for the pilot version of the scale were selected and this pilot version will be tested during the Spring and Fall semesters of 2023.

今後の研究の推進方策

The second phase of the research project will be carried out during the 2023 academic year. This phase consists of three steps. First, the pilot version of the survey will be administered to participants and the data analysed using exploratory factor analysis to uncover the component dimensions of anxiety in group work. The construct validity of the resultant structure will be tested using confirmatory factor analysis. The reliability of the scale will be investigated using test-retest with a new sample in the Fall of 2023. In addition, the convergent validity of the scale will be examined using the IAS, BFNE, and FLCA, while the discriminant validity will be determined using the FLES.
In addition, presentations summarizing the results from the initial survey (conducted in 2022) and the results from the pilot survey will be given this year. A paper on the results from the initial survey will be submitted for publication, and a paper on the validity of an additional measure of social anxiety for use with Japanese university-level English learners will be submitted for publication.

次年度使用額が生じた理由

The cost of the SPSS and AMOS analysis software was less than expected, and the remaining funds will be used to procure additional software to be used in future analysis. In addition, funds which were to be used for conferences that were not attended will be reserved for future conferences.
