| 研究実績の概要 |
From 2022 until now I have been conducted research on the Mt. Yudono cult from the medieval period to the Edo period. During these three years, I wrote five peer reviewed articles in scholarly journals concerning such crucial topics as: the Shungendo initiation rituals, the secrecy in Yudono cult, apotropaic talisman distribution, and sacred materiality such as hanging scrolls and mandala focused on the devotion of Yudono ascetics. I also served guest editor together with Bernard Faure for a special issue on Japanese medieval religions. I have also presented my research achievements in numerous national and international conferences (online and in person) on Japanese pre-modern religions such as, for example, the European Association for Japanese Studies at Ghent University in August 2023.

理由
Due to numerous administrative and teaching commitments at my university, I have not been able to proceed with the research at the pace I had hoped. I remain positive, however, that I will be able to achieve all my goals in the near future.

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
I am currently concentrating on writing a monograph concerning the cult of Mt. Yudono in the Edo period. In these months I am focusing on the transition of the Kumano Sanzan cult from the Kii Peninsula to the Tohoku region during the twelfth century. I am analyzing the written documents and material artifacts left behind by the religious practitioners (Kumano sendatsu) who dealt with this important transition, which laid the foundation for the Edo period faith in Dewa Sanzan. I plan to continue to publish articles in scholarly journals in the field of religious studies, and present papers at international and national conferences.

| 次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Due to administrative and teaching commitments at my university, I have not been able to use all the research funds allocated for this academic year. I intend, however, to continue to use these funds for next year so as to conduct fieldwork, archival research in the Tohoku area as well as Kii peninsula, and purchase books and journals relevant for the study of Shungedo.
