研究実績の概要 |
Using a visual ethnographic approach with a video camera as my primary research tool, I conducted fieldwork in Japan and Nepal to document Nepali immigrants in Japan as well as their families in Nepal. My research in Japan was focused on Tokyo, while in Nepal I conducted fieldwork in Galkot village, Baglung District, Dolakha District, and Kathmandu. Through over 30 hours of audio-visual footage, I specifically examined the current trend of Nepali family migration to Japan and identified the causes, processes, and social consequences of this phenomenon. Additionally, my preliminary research data highlights the significant impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the situation of Nepali immigrants in Japan. Particularly, many Nepali cooks have lost their jobs as restaurants have been among the hardest-hit businesses in Japan due to the pandemic.

理由
As outlined in my research proposal, my plan for 2022 was to document the distinctive case of Nepali migration to Japan using not only traditional anthropological and sociological methods but also visual research methods. I have successfully accomplished this goal and analyzed the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the lives of Nepali immigrants. However, further research is necessary, and additional data must be collected to ensure adequate information for the production of a scholarly manuscript. As such, I am currently in the data collection phase.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
I plan to continue my visual ethnographic research on Nepali migration to Japan, utilizing participant observation techniques such as "deep hanging out" (Fabian 2001: 191). This approach will enable me to observe and interpret the immigrants' activities from a close vantage point, which will provide rich ethnographic data and deepen my understanding of Nepali family migration and its socio-cultural dynamics in the wider Japanese society. Additionally, I intend to examine further the impact of COVID-19 on the immigrants' lives and their everyday experiences in the post-pandemic or "new normal" era. In addition to conducting further research, I plan to write an article or book and edit an ethnographic film using the data I have already collected.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
I had originally planned to purchase additional data storage hard drives and camera memory cards. However, since I did not generate much video data in 2022, I opted not to buy them and instead used my existing hard drives and memory cards. Nevertheless, I intend to purchase these items for 2023 to ensure that I have adequate storage capacity for the video data I plan to collect during my research. Moreover, due to unforeseen circumstances, I was unable to conduct fieldwork in certain locations as planned in 2022. I plan to visit these locations and complete the necessary fieldwork in 2023.
