研究実績の概要 |
This funding contributed to three academic presentations and the following articles in 2022: Brotherhood, T. (Forthcoming, 2023) "Lives on hold: Prospective international students and the #JapanTravelBan". Journal of International Students. The paper offers broader suggestions for appropriate student migration policymaking: greater transparency, attention to students’ security throughout their study sojourn, an emphasis on stability, and resilience to crises. Brotherhood, T. (Under Review) "International faculty: Exploring the relationship between on-campus support and off-campus integration" Higher Education. This study reveals that on-campus support is associated with higher levels of integration in Japanese society, but there are deficiencies in the linguistic and social support offered by universities. These findings indicate that universities seeking to attract and retain international talent should invest in language learning support services, and reflect on the intermediary role they play between international faculty members and the local community.

理由
In my initial application form, my research plan for AY2022 was to complete the following tasks: - Critical literature review - Quantitative analysis of publicly available national statistics - Sampling of 4 universities between Tokyo and “regional” Japan - Developing project materials - Start Tokyo data collection (day trips to research locations to conduct interviews). To date, I have completed the first four steps of the above plan. A critical literature review and survey of national statistics was completed over the preceding year, and this data was used to develop all of the project materials (including bilingual interview protocols, information sheets, informed consent forms etc.), and to complete a randomised sampling procedure to identify the target universities. Tokyo data collection has not yet begun, but is scheduled to commence at the beginning of the summer vacation.
In addition, I have also submitted two manuscripts that were supported by the literature review for this project.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In AY2023, I plan to focus on the following tasks: - Complete Tokyo-based data collection (day trips to research locations to conduct interviews) - Begin data analysis of interview data. - Start “regional” data collection (2 residential research trips of 1 week to conduct interviews) - Writing and presentation of preliminary findings at national and international conferences.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Those funds will be used to catch up with the fieldwork that was not completed during the 2022 year. Fieldwork could not be conducted due to the coronavirus. Expenditures will be made to cover the cost of fieldwork that could not be conducted in FY2022. The overall research goal is the same as was originally planned, so it is important to catch up with fieldwork. As stated on the previous page, the following year's research plan includes a large amount of fieldwork and the start of dissemination of the research. As a result, expenses have increased and focus on fieldwork and travel costs.
