1. We investigated the effects of dispersed nanocellulose on the structure, mechanics, and mass transport property of porous cellulose monoliths prepared by unidirectional freezing. The results indicated that both the aspect ratio and concentration of the nanocellulose affect their possibility of forming connected pore walls. Additionally, the aspect ratio affects the uniformity of the nanocellulose rearrangement. Consequently, porous cellulose monoliths with various structures including irregular honeycomb-, well-aligned honeycomb- and irregular lamellar-shaped microchannels are obtained.
2. A tough carbon microhoneycomb was synthesized by the unidirectional freezing method with nanocellulose as a structure-directing agent and carbon black/phenol-formaldehyde resin as carbon sources.
