研究実績の概要 |
The first year saw the completion of the literature review and data collection phases. The research is employing a mixed-methods approach to identify, test and disseminate solutions to advance the sustainability of handmade ceramic practices. As previously planned, I completed a systematic review of 273 documents (books, articles and media) on sustainable solutions for handmade ceramics. I set up a new ceramic studio at the university to conduct material experiments (including purchasing equipment and materials), conducted interviews in Japan and fieldwork in the UK, and established a collaboration with Exeter University (UK) to produce the first LCA of studio pottery.

理由
(1) Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) currently ongoing with the Leach Pottery (UK) and Prof. Yan of Exeter University (UK) (2) critical practice review completed, currently writing up findings (3) sustainable studio materials collected in Tokyo, testing currently ongoing (4) firing tests with biodiesel replaced with other methods and fuels for unavailability of collaborating lab. (5) interviews with practitioners started with UK fieldwork, March 2023. Initial interviews in Mashiko (Tochigi) conducted in November 2022 and others planned for 2023. (6) public and academic discussions and dissemination through publications and events: 3 articles in the pipeline. a) systematic review of sustainable practices, b&c) 2 articles to be co-written with Prof. Yan on the LCA analysis

今後の研究の推進方策 |
1) LCA analysis to be completed in June and first article submitted in July 2023. 2) critical practice review to write up and submit in summer 2023 3&4) complete materials tests to inform writing and artwork for dissemination by October 2023 5) interviews to continue in UK and complete in Tokyo by December 2023. 6) a minimum of 3 articles to submit by the autumn 2023. A) article on LCA findings (as second author). B) article contextualising LCA findings in pottery and craft studies (first author). C) Systematic literature review of sustainable practice (only author). The study is also informing additional publications to be submitted by March 2024.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Additional equipment and materials will be purchased to enable further material experiments in the new ceramics studio. This will include a ceramic 3D printer to create standard samples and test pieces to compare alternative material additions to clay bodies. Travel expenses will fund the costs associated with travelling to pottery towns (e.g. Mashiko in Tochigi) and within Tokyo to conduct interviews with practitioners.
|
備考 |
The research will inform blogs and social media material following the completion of analysis and publications of articles in 2023.
