研究実績の概要 |
The project has developed new hybrid crystalline materials with two-dimensional-layered architectures comprising C60 and polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) building blocks. The purpose of this work is to chemically manipulate such unique materials in order to drive insulator-to-metal transitions and unveil new magnetic and superconducting phases. To date, the work is being successfully pursued for the triphenylene PAH. Following successful synthesis of the 1:1 co-adduct of triphenylene with C60, we pursued state-of-the-art structural characterization with synchrotron XRD down to cryogenic temperatures revealing a series of structural phase transitions. The resulting hybrid solids have been successfully intercalated with alkali metals leading to a series of new phases which have been structurally characterized. Electronic characterization is now under active investigation.

理由
The purpose of the project isto assemble unsaturated hydrocarbons of varying size, shape and electronic state together with C60 to generate new molecular electronic materials. This is being successfully carried out to an advanced stage. In particular, the resulting low-dimensional strongly correlated architectures are being manipulated chemically to investigate the possibility of switching on superconductivity and magnetism.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
The research plan for the future years consists of three integrated components. (A) Chemical synthesis. We will create hybrid co-crystals of PAHs of varying size and shape and C60 and initiate attempts to intercalate them with alkali metals to produce electron-doped systems. (B) Structural analysis. We will carry out precise structural determination at low temperature and/or high pressure with synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction. (C) Electronic properties. Detailed characterization of the electronic and magnetic properties will be pursued.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
The original targets of this research project are being rapidly achieved and we are proceeding in targeting the availability of the hybrid C60-polyaromatic hydrocarbon materials in large-quantities to allow full physical characterization. The next steps involve more elaborate structural and physical characterization as a function of temperature as well as the utilization of high pressure to enhance the properties. Progress along these lines is extremely challenging. We anticipate that the significant resources necessary to proceed with the implementation, including those carried over will allow completion of the project.
