理由
In the first year, the Fellow comprehensively analysed the social and historical factors of disaster preparedness in Messina. Preliminary results suggest that gender, age, and strength of religious belief do have an impact on the individual risk perception of the respondents and the belief in one’s own abilities to save oneself. It was also found that the population is aware of disaster risk but does not believe in the efficacy of disaster preparedness measures and of the authorities to successfully mitigate risk. On the other hand, the Fellow found the authorities (Fire Fighters and Municipal Offices) greatly interested in the topic and in the idea of an exchange with the Japanese counterparts. The Fellow plans to establish two-way exchanges in the second year of the Fellowship.
