研究実績の概要 |
During this period, I published an article “Lanternflies (Hemiptera: Fulgoridae) of Taiwan” in “Zoological Studies” as a corresponding author. Fulgoridae belongs to Hemiptera and is known for its spectacular body coloration. However, intraspecific polymorphism in body coloration often causes taxonomic difficulties and problems. This is the first comprehensive discussion of the taxonomy of Fulgoridae in Taiwan, discussing the general application of color in the taxonomy of lanternflies and highlighting the importance of male genitalia to taxonomy. In this study, eight species in six genera from Taiwan were reported, including one newly recorded species, Limois westwoodii. Lycorma olivacea was proposed as a new junior synonym of Lycorma meliae based on the morphology of its male genitalia. The fifth-instar nymph of Saiva formosana was also described for the first time. We believe that this study will become the crucial framework of fulgorid studies not only in Taiwan but also worldwide.

理由
The study aims to test effectiveness of integrated approaches for clarifying the species boundaries and speciation continuum among two spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) and related species. The works will be separated into field collection, morphological examination, molecular analysis, and niche modeling. The most important progress in the last year (2022.11 to 2022.3) was a spider mite survey in Ishigaki and Yonaguni to investigate the occasional occurrence of two forms of T. uricae in past records. On both islands, mite collections were conducted in more than 50 locations, from agricultural areas to deep forests. For example, Mitsudahara Forest Park on Yonaguni island and Yarabudake on Ishigaki island were investigated. In addition, several field collections were conducted near Tokyo, such as Mt. Takao. Occurrence data of target and related spider mites were also prepared for future ENM modeling.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
The second period will investigate spider mites in unexplored areas of Japan, for example Hokkaido. The collection of spider mite will be continued in the following year, and in addition to this study, we can also explore other taxonomic issues related with mites. Quantitative measurements of spider mites will be extracted from photographs by ImageJ 1.47 (Schneider et al. 2012) and identified by XGBoost (Liao et al. 2020). Preserved specimens will be extracted genomic DNA and obtained the genomic-wide sequences according to Suyama & Matsuki (2015) and Eguchi et al. (2020). Period 3 (2024.4~2024.11) Previous results will be aggregated in the period. Niche modelling of spider mites will be conducted by MaxEnt. Species boundary will be tested based on multiple perspectives in a Bayesian coalescent framework in INTEGRATED BAYESDIAN PHYLOGENETICS and PHYLOGEOGRAPHY (iBPP). The study will serve as the basis for a multi-perspective study of speciation processes and closely related species issue.
