研究実績の概要 |
The main objective of this research is to investigate the level of heterogeneity in crop selection, yields, and sales resulting from information sharing among farmers and market actors in the beneficiary areas of the JICA-SHEP project in Ethiopia. The specific objective of this study is to examine the potential homogenizing effects of information sharing on three key variables, namely crop selection, yields, and crop sales, among horticultural crop-producing farmers in both the Oromia and Amhara regions of Ethiopia, using cross-sectional data. Data were collected from 300 participants of the SHEP project and 300 non-participants in the Oromia region in Ethiopia in December 2022. To prevent the spillover effect of the SHEP project intervention, the data were collected from three categories of farmers: the treated group in the treated areas (200, consisting of 149 male and 51 female farmers), the control group in the treated areas (200, consisting of 145 male and 55 female farmers), and the pure control group in the control area (200, consisting of 129 male and 71 female farmers).

理由
This study aimed to collect data from the two largest regions in Ethiopia: the Oromia and Amhara regions, which are the main beneficiaries of the JICA-SHEP project in Ethiopia. We traveled to Ethiopia and collected data from the Oromia region between December 18, 2022, and February 14, 2023. Due to the vastness of the two regions, we were only able to collect data from the Oromia region during that period. The data collected from the Oromia region may not fully represent the homogenizing effects of information sharing on crop selection, yields, and crop sales in the Amhara region of Ethiopia. Therefore, our research objectives can only be addressed for the Oromia region at present. A comprehensive research report, covering both the Oromia and Amhara regions, will be prepared after data collection from the Amhara region in Ethiopia in 2023. The report will be submitted to the Ritsumeikan research office in April 2024.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
From May to October 2023, we will focus on our research objective in the context of the Oromia region, Ethiopia. Specifically, we will examine the impact of information sharing on crop selection, yields, and crop sales in the Oromia region and publish a paper based on the data collected. From November 2023 to March 2024, we will expand our research to include both the Oromia and Amhara regions. To achieve this, we plan to travel to Ethiopia and collect data in the Amhara region from November to December 2023. From January to March 2024, we will analyze the data collected from the Amhara region. Furthermore, we will conduct region-based analyses to address the objectives of our research and make recommendations for future directions of the SHEP project.
