外国語学習における成功と失敗に対する台湾人大学生の原因帰属意識

Attribution theory hypothesizes that we attribute our successes and failures to various causes, and that these attributions affect future behavior. This study initially looked at how Taiwanese university students viewed their successes and failures in language learning. Over 450 university students were asked to what they attributed their successes and failures in language learning, and the results of this inquiry are to be compared with similar results from other Asian countries (Japan, Thailand, and Malaysia). If the results for Taiwan mirror the results for previous research in Asia, then we may hypothesize that there is a cultural bias for attributions, with many Western cultures attributing success to internal factors and failure to external factors, and Asian cultures attributing success and failure to external and internal factors. This is important, because these attitudes affect how students and teachers view education, and consequently, educational practices that may be effective in Western settings may not be applicable to Asian settings.
In exploring this point, the author researched student attitudes towards digital learning/technology, which is more individually-based, with learning and success being more dependent on the learner than the instructor. While investigating how Japanese students respond to digital learning/technology, it was found that they prefer traditional teaching and learning methods with an emphasis on classroom learning and guidance from a teacher.
