The 1st and 2nd discussion forums and workshop, the first ever meeting in Japan, proved to be a successful gathering of educators responsible for dental English education. The presentations of the current status of English courses in dentistry by each school representative and the fact-finding discussions proved to be a good source of base knowledge for the development of a core curriculum. After the 2nd meeting, the core curriculum was approved by consensus and is endorsed to the Ministry of Education (MEXT). Book-bounded copies were distributed to the Japan Dental Association and Japan’s 29 dental schools. The core curriculum and two of its associated studies were presented at the 11th Annual Worldwide Forum on Education and Culture held in Rome last November 28-30, 2012. A journal version with a supplemental file of the full report is also under consideration for publication in an international journal. The proposed core curriculum is expected to collectively increase the academic rank of dental schools to a global level by opening further opportunities to future dental school graduates and raising the individual capabilities of faculty members thereby increasing scientific output and promoting a truly global academic environment.
