We examined the relationship of conformity and scholastic levels of junior high school students utilizing the fMORI-Asch experimental paradigm (Mori & Arai, 2010). Same sex foursomes of 264 students of a Japanese junior high school participated in the study (30 groups in Exp.1 and 36 in Exp.2). Only the third participant in each foursome observed the standard lines differently from the others without noticing the presentation trick (the fMORI technique) that created the minority (the 3rd) and majority (the 1st, 2nd and 4th) without utilizing confederates in the Asch line judgment tasks. We classified the students into three levels with their scholastic achievements in the most recent term examination. In the Exp.1, ten students (five boys and five girls) were randomly selected from each of the three levels and grouped with the students of the same level that formed the majority. In the Exp.2, 12 high-level minority students (six boys and six girls) were grouped with low-level majorities, and 12 low-level minorities with high-level majorities. The results showed that the low-level students tended to conform more frequently than middle- and high-level students irrespective of the levels of the majority students they were grouped with. No gender differences were found.
