研究実績の概要 |
Locomotive syndrome (LS) threatens healthy life expectancy, and prevention and/or improvement are critical. The Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) recommends physical exercise to prevent and/or improve LS. Additionally, nutritional counseling with physical exercise is recommended. Although a previous study also reported that the positive effect of sleep management optimized sleep quality and quantity on physical function, the effect of sleep management combined with physical exercise for LS has yet to be investigated. Therefore, the current study aims to compare sleep management combined with physical exercise to nutrition intervention with physical exercise on LS in older adults. This study will provide a more practical option for preventing LS in addition to the strategy based on exercise and nutrition advocated by JOA. Until now, I have analyzed and reviewed the effects of exercise interventions on older adults to decide on appropriate exercise programs that are effective for sleep and nutrition.

理由
When I investigated the effect of exercise intervention on sleep, I found that resistance training improved sleep quality in older adults more than physical activity. However, since older Japanese people are usually not used to resistance training and do not go to the gym, I found it necessary to devise ways to get the same effect from resistance training. The training method may be weight-bearing training. How about combining weight-bearing training with sleep or nutritional interventions? I also reviewed and analyzed how practical bodyweight training improves locomotive syndrome.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In addition to exercise intervention methods, I will also investigate appropriate nutrition and sleep interventions to improve locomotive syndrome in older adults. Moreover, exercise with nutrition and exercise with sleep may have different effects, respectively. To demonstrate the effectiveness of exercise and nutrition interventions and exercise and sleep interventions, I will consider the measures, decide on an experimental protocol, and submit it to an ethics application.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
When I start this study, it will cost money to buy equipment to measure participants' sleep, and nutritional food should be provided to participants. That is why I did not use any research funds this year. Moreover, the budget will be used for costs to pay for the evaluators who measure participants’ physical functions.
