研究実績の概要

In FY2023, a literature review on the relationship between self-distancing and support-seeking was conducted to ensure the theoretical soundness of the proposed model. Moreover, an additional study was conducted to provide more practical evidence and strengthen the theoretical basis for the present project. The results showed that experimentally inducing empathic concern increased support-seeking across cultures. A manuscript incorporating this study is currently under review in Emotion.
As planned, the work for Study 1 was completed. The results showed that those who spontaneously adopted a self-distancing perspective when reflecting on a stressful event were likely to experience greater empathic concern and be more willing to seek social support. Building on these results, the PI developed and tested an experimental manipulation for self-distancing to further investigate the causal relationship between self-distancing and support-seeking in Study 2. The current findings offer preliminary support for self-distancing as a potentially effective strategy for increasing voluntary support-seeking.

理由

The plan for FY2023 was to complete the literature review, conduct data collection for Studies 1 and 2, and set up the lab for Study 3. These tasks were progressed as planned. The PI conducted a more in-depth literature review on the relationships between self-distancing and support-seeking. In addition to the planned studies, the PI conducted an additional study to further test the relationship between state empathic concern and support-seeking, providing a stronger research basis for the current project. A manuscript incorporating this study is currently under review. The online data collection for Study 1, which examines the correlational relationship between dispositional self-distancing and support-seeking, was completed. Although data collection for Study 2 is still in progress, the experimental manipulation for self-distancing was established and pilot tested. Finally, the preparation for Study 3, including PC and related programming software, was completed as planned.

今後の研究の推進方策

First, the remaining work for Study 2 will be completed in early FY2024. Then, consistent with the initial research plan stated in the proposal, the major effort in FY2024 will be spent on Study 3. I will recruit and invite about 210 students to my lab to participate in the experimental task for Study 3. After completing the data analysis, I will write a manuscript based on the results of all three studies and submit it to an international journal. Meanwhile, I will attend the SPSP (The Society for Personality and Social Psychology) 2025 Annual Convention in February 2025 to present the latest results of this project.

次年度使用額が生じた理由

It took more pilot runs than the PI expected to test the effectiveness of the experimental manipulation method for self-distancing. As a result, formal data collection for Study 2 has not started until now. However, the effective manipulation for self-distancing has been established, and formal data collection is ready to start in FY2024, which will incur additional costs for the honorarium to participants.
