研究実績の概要 |
In the FY 2023, because of the delayed of 2022's research tasks, we planned to obtain use JASSO survey data, and do policy analysis. We will interview university international offices, as well as Japanese language academies. Our activities and achievements include: 1. Obtaining and analyzing JASSO survey data of international students (2021): We found that the higher the level of education, the more likely students enter STEM majors. PhD programs have more STEM international students than master's and undergraduate programs. International students who enter graduate schools directly are more likely to be STEM majors than those who go through undergraduate programs in Japan. 2. Follow-up interviews: We have reinterviewed Chinese students in Germany and Japan who we talked to 2 years ago to obtain information on their mobility trajectories and their reflection on their study abroad decisions. 3. Stakeholder interviews: Project members interviewed DAAD in Germany, international office staff in Japan, and teachers and administrators at language academies. 4. Organizing an international symposium "Democratizing International Student Mobility" in February, 2024. 23 papers out of 80 submissions presented at the two-day conference. The special issue proposal for Journal of Immigration and Refugee Studies has been accepted. 5. Using the data on Syrian international students in Japan, we have published a paper titled "Neoliberal humanitarianism: Contradictory policy logics and Syrian refugee experiences in Japan" in Migration Studies.

理由
Although we have altered the research plan and chosen not to conduct a quantitative survey, we have managed to obtain statistical information through analyzing existing JASSO data. We are also able to conduct follow-up interviews with students who interviewed two years ago. Such data helps us understand the determinants and motivations of study abroad--the main themes of this research project. Most importantly, the international symposium was very successful. It not only allows us to present research outcomes and produce publications, but also gives us inspirations about how to proceed in the final year of the project.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In the final year of this project, our focus will be on: 1) Drafting papers, editing and completing the two special issues that we have proposed; 2) Doing a final round of data gathering in order to be able to address the research questions raised in the project proposal: What are the determinants and processes of international student mobility? How do the cases of Japan and Germany help us understand such processes. 3) Organizing a workshop presenting our research findings on: International Education Policy in Germany and Japan; Determinants and processes of international student mobilities into Japan and Germany; the respective roles of individual students, families, brokers, institutions, and government policies in the mobility decision making and processes. 4) Trying to come up with an edited volume or special issue based on this project.
