Globally, young people are increasingly turning away from agriculture and rural futures. Who will be farmers in the future? Young people’s reluctance to engage in agriculture is associated with the critical problems of youth unemployment, agricultural decline, and poverty, particularly in Asia. Drawing on evidence generated from comparative field studies in rural Indonesia, Japan and Nepal, our project seeks to offer nuanced understandings of the complex relationships between young people and agriculture in rural Asia.
To this end, our research project made three key achievements in 2022. First, we undertook an extensive review of relevant literature on youth and agriculture in Asia and other parts of the world. This has informed our fieldwork and academic papers which we are drafting. Second, we carried out a questionnaire survey with young people and other key stakeholders along with in-depth interviews in rural parts of Japan and Nepal, generating a rich database providing a foundation for academic and policy relevant publications. Using insights from our field data, we drafted a manuscript on youth-agriculture disconnect for submission to a reputed international journal. Finally, in December 2022 we organized a research workshop in Kathmandu, Nepal and presented our work-in-progress research on youth and agriculture in Japan and Nepal. The workshop was attended by a range of participants representing youth, scholars, thinktanks, agricultural entrepreneurs and policy makers.
