研究実績の概要

Love Oskarson Kindstrand has been intensely focused on writing since last spring: first on completing the book manuscript based on his dissertation and, increasingly since the winter period, on developing the theoretical parts of his new project on "algorithmic labor." This latter project was also described in his original JSPS application and now takes up most of his time. This has included (1) ethnographic fieldwork both with couriers in different areas of Tokyo, and at industry events for tech and policy innovation around mobile app marketplaces like Uber. It has also included (2) participating in a workshop series and conference on "neo-feudalism" at the University of Chicago. Finally, (3)Kindstrand have published several written pieces (non-peer reviewed) developing his perspective.

理由

Love Oskarson Kindstrand has transitioned fully to completing the research project outlined in his original application to JSPS. The project has evolved in that it is now less focused on ethnographic descriptions of distinctly Japanese conditions, and more on theoretical and speculative concerns that puts his work in conversation with the growing body of research on work in the platform economy. Meanwhile, He has explored specifically Japan-related themes of the same work through a series of interviews with activists and writers engaged with the so-called “Toyoko kids” phenomenon and published I do miss teaching and am also dedicating time to surveying and applying for academic job openings on both sides of the Pacific.

今後の研究の推進方策

The current academic year will be a crucial transition period for Kindstrand and his foremost goal is to find a permanent research and/or teaching position at a Japanese or North American university while also seeing through the two separate research projects begun (and largely completed) during his first year as a postdoctoral fellow. One aspect of his remaining time as a fellow that he struggles to envisage is the public programming he proposed at his host institution: there is a certain “cutting edge” nature to his research topic that makes it challenging to invite other researchers from different disciplines to productive discussion. Kindstrand is planning to organize a limited series of symposia where he engages and moderates discussion with invited speakers on related themes.

次年度使用額が生じた理由

2023年度に学会発表と国際シンポジウムを準備していたが、2023年度は論文執筆に集中したたために計画が2024年度に後ろ倒しされた。
