研究実績の概要

In the first year of this research, we concentrated on developing a theoretical framework. More specifically, research into the existing literature on ageing, wellbeing, and wellageing focusing on public housing was undertaken, and the following points were identified as key points. First, although there is a certain amount of literature on housing and the wellbeing of older people from the perspective of sociology and social psychology, including international comparisons, there is insufficient research focusing on the impact of the physical housing structure (living environment) on people's sense of wellbeing. Secondly, few of those studies have focused explicitly on the living environment of elders living in public housing. Third, even in representative research projects on ageing, such as JSTAR in Japan and SHARE in Europe, there are no survey questions on the living environment of elders. Thus, there is a problem with the data when conducting a systematic analysis.

We identified an international comparison with ageing, wellbeing, and well-ageing in public housing as key concepts in light of the above. In particular, based on prior research in Japan and France, it is necessary to consider the contrast between sociological factors, such as the human and relational resources possessed by individuals, and environmental factors, such as the physical housing structure (living environment), will be examined through a systematic analysis using quantitative survey data. In order to achieve these aims, a survey questionnaire was examined.

理由

We met different scholars in France and Japan to discuss the different aspects of our research and get the needed support for the empiric work. We also start a French and Japanese academic network on ageing in public housing, which should continue after the research project. Based on a GIS analysis using tenure types and demographic data, we identified ageing public housing districts in Paris’s metropolitan Area and Tokyo Metropolitan Area. We have chosen Tama New Town districts for the Japanese case. In addition to being an ageing area, research on ageing and housing have been conducted 20 years ago in Nagayama, what allows a comparison over time and after some adaptation and renovation work in public housing buildings. We will define in the next weeks the French case studies. More time as being needed to find the most appropriate cases and ensure the best return way for our questionnaires. Time of reflections and discussions have been needed to develop a questionnaire adapted to two countries with different languages and some housing specificities. We are currently working to submit all the needed document to the Research Ethic Comity of the Tokyo Metropolitan University to start our field work in autumn 2024 after getting their agreement. In the meantime, we are meeting local stakeholders to present our research and facilitate the data collection. Thus the delay, we may observe in our original plan is not an issue for the research project.

今後の研究の推進方策

We will summit our research plan to the Research Ethic Comity of the Tokyo Metropolitan University in June to be able to start the data collection in autumn in Japan and France. We are planning one month of field research in Paris’s area in September 2024 to share the questionnaires and conduct interviews with representatives of housing management organizations and tenants’ associations. It should be between 5 and 10 interviews. We will share the questionnaires in Tama New Town and discuss with ageing tenants between mid-October and mid-November 2024. Besides, in summer we will start conducting expert interviews with representatives of JKK, UR, Tama Municipality and Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Jichikai’s representatives, with the help of a student assistant for the translation. It should be between 5 and 10 interviews. The Japanese’s interviews will be translated into French or English before the qualitative analysis. The analysis of the interviews and the survey’s results should start in January 2025. We want to share the first results of the research in spring 2025 to international academic network and participate to international conferences on housing to present our results in summer 2025.
