Between Apil 2014 and August 2014, the principal investigator continued to be a Visting Academic at the Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies at the University of Oxford, UK. He began this appountment on 1 September 2013. During this time, he was able to conduct interviews with researchers at British think tanks (e.g. Royal United Services Institute, RUSI, International Institute of Security Studies, IISS), British universities (Oxford University, Cambridge University, Kings College, LSE, SOAS, Warwick University, etc.), British government officials , and security officials at Japanese embassies in Europe, officials at the NATO Maritime Command in Northwood (UK), as well as officials at the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium. The principal investigator was also able to participate in a large number of conferences, symposia, and public lectures, and had the opportuntiy to discuss his research question with many specialists. He was able to collect a large number of government documents and other source material, that was helpful in better understanding the Japanese cooperation in the counter-piracy mission off the coast of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden. During his time in the UK, he was invoted to give open lectures at the University of Cambridge, Warwick University, and in February 2015, the University of Oxford. During his time in the UK and between September 2014 and March 2015, the principal investigator wrote two journal articles and a book manuscript. Both will be published in 2015 and 2016.
