研究概要 |
We investigated whispering gallery modes of different shapes besides cylindrical - such as square, triangular - but found that cylindrical has the best optical properties. We computed the optical properties of arrays of silver nanorods (10 - 20 nm in diameter, spacing 20-50 nm) in the visible wavelengths, where the real part of the electrical permittivity is negative. Some of these programs were implemented on a supercomputer. Also devised a new FDTD image reconstruction method.

理由
We have successfully implemented our algorithms on a supercomputer. We have successfully computed optical properties of silver nanorods, which are metamaterials (negative real permittivity) in visible wavelengths. We have verified a discrete Green’s function computational methodology.A by product of our work is a new method to reconstruct shapes using time reversed FDTD. The calculations require a large amount of computer time and numerical stability can arise if the algorithms are not carefully designed. We successfully overcame these difficulties and could obtain good results.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
We are engaged in discussions with some laboratories that might be able to fabricate and test a whispering gallery mode devise, and an array of silver nanorods. We plan to implement and test a discrete Green’s function calculation of nanorod properties and compare with the currentl - used method (recursive convolution).

次年度の研究費の使用計画 |
Whispering gallery mode は円だけではなく、四角、三角などいろいろな形状で発生する。当該年度は、各種形状での発生状況の調査に終始し、GPUなどを使った大規模計算、設計は行わなかった。そのため、基礎研究に終始し、GPU購入などは本年度にまわすこととなった。 GPUの購入に77万円、GPUを用いた大規模計算、データ整理、可視化、素子設計のアルバイト謝金・人件費に70万円、これらの研究発表に20万円の旅費を計画している。
