In the first year of the project, we focused on several key parameters that affect spin mechanics, i.e. the coupling between the magnetization and the lattice in nanoscale heterostructures. The interaction of a spin heat accumulation was found to be dominated by electron-phonon scattering and not by the spin-orbit interaction by comparing the experiments that for the first time identified the concept of a spin temperature. We developed the theory of the spin Hall magnetoresistance, the ac spin Hall effect, and expose the relation between the optical Stark and inverse Faraday effects. We modelled the spin Seebeck, spin Peltier effects, found an important role for the magnon-phonon interaction. We also proposed and modelled spin Seebeck thermoelectric generators.

A slight delay in the start-up of the project was caused by problems to find suitable post-doc to support the project goal.
We will carry out research in the line of the project purpose in magnetic heterostructures, studying the magnetization dynamics and its interaction with the lattice via spin-orbit interactions. To this end, we (i)Address the coupling of spin and mechanical angular momentum by solving the Landau-Lifshitz (LL) equation coupled to the lattice for better understanding of ultrasound actuation of magnetization dynamics, also in the parametric pumping regime. (ii)Develop the theory of ac-spin transfer torque ferromagnetic resonance in bilayers with magnetic insulators and compare with experiments. (iii)Study the statistical fluctuation in magnetic heterostructures (spin noise) and compare with experiments. (iv)Develop the theory and understanding of light-induced dynamics. (v)Study the effects of the magnon-phonon interaction on the spin Peltier effect.
