In this fiscal year, we have mainly obtained the following results for studying THz emitters using intrinsic Josephson junctions. 1.To understand the mechanism, we utilized low temperature scanning laser microscopy (LTSLM) to visualize the EM resonance modes inside the THz emitter, and detected the emission outside the THz emitter simultaneously. Apart from visualization of pronounced patterns of different resonance modes, we also observed the transition between several different modes while varying the bias voltage. 2.To fully control THz emitters, we fabricated a 3-terminal THz emitter, and successfully varied the emission power up to 10 times. Using LTSLM, we can increase the emission power by up to 75% by heating the sample with a focused laser beam. 3.To increase the THz emission frequency, we used a sandwiched structure, with which the emission frequency can up to 1.3 THz, and 2.4 THz with the same structure by different group. The operation temperatures can be increased up to 85 K. Therefore, we fabricated a THz flash which can be driven by a 1.5 V battery. The operation can be in liquid nitrogen.
