研究概要 |
So far, I have successfully completed the first part of this project, which is designing and developing natural user interfaces for the people who have visual impairments. Especially, by collaborating with POSTECH University in Korea, we created user interfaces that support gestural input commend and tactile feedbacks for the users who have severe visual impairments. Using this technology, we have conducted several experiments with local blind associations. The outcome of these experiments were written and submitted to the international conferences and journal, such as the ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, the ACM User Interface Software and Technology Symposium, and Journal of Computer Science and Technology. Four papers are currently reviewed for publications. In addition, a couple of undergraduate students, who helped conduct the experiments, got a chance of presenting the progress of this work as posters in the 21th Workshop on Interactive Systems and Software (WISS) at Kochi on December 2013, sponsored by Japan Society for Software Science and Technology.

理由
The first part of this project was to design and develop assistive user interfaces for the people who have visual impairment. I have successfully completed designing and developing assistive user interfaces for the people who have visual impairments, by collaborating with POSTECH University in Korea. I have also conducted several experiments with the users who have visual impairments to test the effectiveness of the technology, which was developed as a part of the project. As a next step, I will conduct more experiments for user collaborations between people who have visual impairments and the sighted people. The result of this new study will be published in the international conference and journals.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
By extending the user interaction technologies, which was developed so far, I will conduct experiments to verify the effectiveness of the developed UIs for display-mediated collaborations between people who have visual impairments, or between sighted people and people who have visual impairments: (1)I will develop patterns for multi-user interactions with a large public display and study engagement by people who have visual impairments in teamwork. This empirical study will consist of a series of controlled laboratory experiments. (2)I will evaluate how the affordances of in situ usage of the display will impact the appropriateness of collaboration between people who have visual impairments and sighted people. (3)To make the study informative in evaluating collaborations with people who have visual impairments, I will devise tasks whose nature can be specified in a manageable manner in terms of the user interfaces’ effectiveness in enabling people who have visual impairments to make analogous judgments and perform equivalent actions as their partners. To conduct the above studies, I will use computer vision tracking systems such as Leap Motion and Vicon system. These tracking systems will provide real-time tracking information and enable to provide effective interactions based on the captured contextual information.

次年度の研究費の使用計画 |
平成25年度予算は予定通り執行しましたが77円の端数がでました。 1.Part of the KAKENHI fund will be used for getting software and hardware to conduct the experiments. It will include Leap motion devices, a notebook computer, statistics analysis software, and displays. 2.Part of the KAKENHI fund will be used for recruiting participants for the experiment and paying for their participation. 3.Part of the KAKENHI fund will be used for attending the international conference which will be host by Kochi University of Technology on November to discuss our study with world-known researchers.
