During 2016-17, the following tasks were performed for this project. (1) Social media data was collected for the major political parties, candidates, and election management boards during the period immediately preceding the 2016 Upper House election. Research materials were also collected to analyze the discourse concerning the change in the legal voting age in Japan. (2) Twitter data for the election management boards was analyzed, and the results of the Twitter analysis were presented at the Japan Studies Association Conference 2016 in October 2016 in Vancouver, Canada. Twitter data for the major political parties was analyzed and the results were presented at the DISC 2016 (Daegu Gyeongbuk International Social Network Conference) Conference in December 2016 in Daegu, South Korea. Two academic papers are being drafted currently concerning these presentations. (3) Three interviews with election marketing specialists were conducted in March 2017 to gather background information concerning political party and political candidate use of the Internet. The results of these interviews are currently being prepared as an academic paper. (4) An invited lecture summarizing the history of the political use of the Internet in Japan and situating it within the current social-media context and political campaign was prepared and given at Yeungnam University in March 2017. The researcher is currently making an outline and proposal for a book concerning the Internet and political campaigning in Japan.
