研究概要 |
In FY2013, I collected a number of important materials concerning meditation on the impure, including the remaining fascicles of the new edition of Sravakabhumi, the facsimile of the relevant parts of the manuscript, and a newly published article. I gave a paper at the conference, “From Abhidhamma To Abhidharma: Early Buddhist Scholasticism in India, Central Asia, and China,” Ghent, Belgium, July 8-9, 2013, on the Chinese Buddhist, Qingying Huiyuan's treatment of the meditation on the impure. At this conference, I was advised that the passages in Sravakabhumi were the most important for my research, and I have completed the first English translation of two of the three major passages. I also completed preparations for a guest lecture (given on 4/4/ 2014) at the Atelier d'embryologie indienne at Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris, and read and discussed Jaina texts on the meditation with Professor Nalini Balbir of the University of Paris.

理由
I discovered that the order in which I was planning to deal with textual sources, with the earliest sources (especially Mahavibhasa) first, was less suitable for my purpose than to deal first with a somewhat later, less studied source (Sravakabhumi). This may be more efficient in the long run and does not represent a delay.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In 2014, I shall complete the translation of the passages from Sravakabhumi on meditation on the impure, making corrections to the current edition when necessary. I shall give a presentation on my findings in Sravakabhumi on a panel entitled "Meditation and Doctrine in Yogacara," at the 17th Congress of the International Association of Buddhist Studies (August 18 to 23, 2014, University of Vienna). I shall then return to the passages in Mahavibhasa and translate as many as possible. In 2015, I plan to prepare a monograph on the subject of the Buddhist meditation on the impure.

次年度の研究費の使用計画 |
One of the most expensive items, the facsimile edition of the entire Sravakabhumi, proved to be unobtainable. Also, due to my change in emphasis from earier sources to Sravakabhumi, I did not purchase a number of other primary and secondary sources. Recently, two important editions of the Tibetan canon have become available on dvds. I plan to purchase these with my money remaining from fy 2013.
