研究実績の概要 |
We held a research-planning meeting for 2014 at Sugiyama Jogakuin University in Nagoya, Japan on June 6th, 2014. On June 7th, we presented our 2013 research results at the Japan Association for Language Teaching: Computer Assisted Language Learning (JALTCALL).
We conducted Trial 2 in the Fall-Winter semester of 2014 and tested our hypothesis in a controlled experiment involving introductory English classes in Japan (N = ca. 81) and introductory Japanese classes at a university in the U.S. (N = ca. 48). In this trial, we made two changes. First, we used one university in Japan and one university in the U.S. instead of two universities in each country, and second, we assigned one introductory English class in Japan to be the control group (N = ca. 21).
The control group engaged in regular classroom activities, while the treatment group was enhanced with Web 2.0 activities (Facebook and posting videos) to gauge the effectiveness of the treatments relative to the control group. The experimental pedagogic approach included enhancements to the activities modified by PI-Fujii in Trial 1, 2013. Assessment included quantitative and qualitative research instruments at three points in time; pre (baseline), post (after the treatment), and a follow-up assessment (three months later). We also added a reflection log component for the experimental group to elicit more open-ended responses based on general questions about their impression of the activities.

現在までの達成度 (区分)
2: おおむね順調に進展している
理由
During Trial 2, we collected 3 types of data (questionnaire responses, reflection log entries, and Facebook contents) and analyzed two (questionnaire and reflection log). Questionnaire responses were collected before and after the project and interviews with focus groups were also collected and analyzed.
The results suggest that, like the blog activity, the Facebook activity encouraged students to create a rich and vibrant learning community with the opportunity for language exchange with native speakers. Moreover, the Facebook activity had more engagement and motivated the students more than the previous year’s blog activity. Also, the reflection log results highlight the positive effects of using Facebook to interact with native speakers of the target language.
Facebook content data have been collected and will be analyzed quantitatively for the number of tokens and lexical density, and then summarized. The salient results will be presented at the Japan Association for Language Teaching: Computer Assisted Language Learning (JALTCALL), in June of 2015.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
We will conduct Trial 3 in the Fall-Winter semester of 2015 with introductory English classes in Japan (Kanazawa Institute of Technology) (N = ca. 100) and introductory Japanese classes at a university in the U.S. (N = ca. 70).
We made a few adjustments in Trial 2. The experimental pedagogic approach was adjusted based on the experimental results of Trial 1, which resulted in Facebook replacing blogs. Data collection and analysis will again include quantitative and qualitative research instruments at the same three points in time mentioned above (pre, post, and follow-up three months later), similar to Trial 1 and 2. However, the final report will contain only two, due to the fact that the next report will be submitted in April, 2016, which will be before the final follow-up).
Also, although our original plan was to find an alternative university to include in Trial 2, due to one of the U.S. RC’s returning to Japan, we conducted the study with one university in Japan and one in the U.S. We will maintain this arrangement for Trial 3, as time and monetary limitations prohibit the addition of new members at this time.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
We conducted the workshop that was originally planned for the U.S. in Japan, timing it to coincide with the majority of the Japanese RC’s returning to Japan for the summer. This will allow us to reallocate funds for continuing the project in 2015.
|
次年度使用額の使用計画 |
In 2015, we will purchase additional licenses for NVivo 10, since our previous license is limited to only two computers. We will also purchase computers for use with this software in data analysis. In addition, we will use the significant savings in travel expenses, due to our holding the RC final meeting in Japan, towards the cost of attending and presenting at JALTCALL and an international conference.
