研究概要 |
Urban sprawl is an un-planned and uneven outgrowth driven by multiple processes. Often Sprawl is considered as inefficient consumption of land and natural resources. City authorities are often using policy measures to contain sprawl. At the same time sprawl in many rapidly growing cities is a process that provide affordable land and housing opportunities to city dwellers. Decentralization of activities and sub urbanization of economic activities are central to the sprawl in those cities. There are numerous studies about sprawl in Northern American and European cities. There are lack of studies that are trying to measure urban sprawl across different scales and time in rapidly growing Asian cities. The objective of 2013 research was developing methods of measuring physical growth of rapidly expanding Asian cities in spatial and temporal scale. Author has measured the urban expansion process of Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh city using satellite images for multiple years. Data sets for the analysis was prepared using classified satellite images from three periods of 1990's early 2000 and 2013. This data was then used to measure the changes in urbanization patterns chronologically for the whole city and try to understand the trends in growth patterns by measuring five attributes of urban growth; extent, scatter growth, suburbanization and contiguity using spatial matrices and spatial measurements of built up area for all four case studies. The outcome of this study for Yugyakartha city was presented in an international conference in 2013 January.

理由
The research work of 2013 has achieved one important goal that was planed under the original three years research plan. In the three years plan it was planned to achieve three research objectives. First to measure the urban sprawl quantitatively in selected South and Southeast Asian cities and to understand patterns and dynamics of urban sprawl. Then the sprawl was expected to study using time series data sets to understand the urbanization process in each city. Later in step three it was expected to understand the relationship of sprawl and the different planning practices and economic environments. The first objective of the study was planned to understand sprawl using satellite data sets. The second stage was expecting to study characteristics of urban sprawl using multiple statistical and spatial analysis methods. Out of the total research, 2013 work manage to measure the urban expansion process with satellite data sets for three cities originally planned in the study. And those data was later analyzed using spatial matrices to understand temporal dynamics of sprawl. In the original plane for 2013, it was expected to visit Jakarta, Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh to gather statistical and spatial data necessary for detail analysis. Later the visit to Bangkok had to postpone because of political unrest in the city. Therefore author has revised the research plan to maximize the efficiency by expanding in-house work of image analysis by spatial matrices to understand the spatial and temporal process of those cities.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
The research work for the year 2014 was organized under three main tasks, data gathering work, data analysis work and publishing result and achievements for the benifit of public and in academic publications. The data gathering work mainly focus on gathering statistical and spatial data of urban activities that are necessary to study urban characteristics of sprawl related to suburbanization of urban activities. The first quarter of the year will be allocated to the data gathering work including travel to Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh and Phnom Penh. the remaining two study ares will be visited in later part of the year. Data gathering work also include collecting additional high quality satellite images for all study areas for multiple years. The second quarter of the year will concentrate on organizing data and analyzing them to study sprawl dynamics and using both satellite data and statistical methods for all study ares. Statistical and spatial analysis involves additional work of processing data in GIS environment. These tasks will be carried out parallel to the analyzing satellite images and using spatial metrics similar to that of 2013. Third and final quarter of the year will be used to understand the relationship of urban sprawl and the urban planning process and economic activities. In third quarter author is expecting to publish this work in an international journal. In addition to that original data prepared by the author will made available for the public and for other researchers in a dedicated web site.

次年度の研究費の使用計画 |
The research work of 2013 had to be reorganized because of the postponement of data gathering trips. There were three study trips planed for 2013 originally. Out of those three trips one trip was conducted successfully and the research work based on that was presented in an international conference held in January 2014. The remaining trips were postponed and the research on those sites was conducted using satellite images and other statistical methods, which were originally planned at a later stage of the study. Those trips were postponed after learning the difficulty of conducting research because of unstable political conditions in one study area. Author is planning to resume those study trips and related research in 2014 since the ground condition has improved considerably. Remaining funds from the previous year will be used to resume data gathering work at Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City that were originally planed for 2013. The method and the data to be gathered will be same as in the original plan. These trips will be organized with the assistance of universities and urban planning bodies in study areas. These trips will gather spatial data in the form of maps and original measurements based on onsite GPS measurements that will be compared with classified satellite image data prepared in previous year. Statistical data will be gathered for further analysis. At the same time author will study the planning practice and collect related written works of the study area with the assistance of experts during these trips.
